Morris County is home to tons of activities, events, and locations ideal for families and kids to enjoy. While it's always tempting to hop a train to New York City, there are plenty of museums, theaters, and parks to visit with your loved ones right around the corner in the county.

Morris Museum

This museum is a must for families in the area. They host family-friendly events year-round, including a fall festival, winter festival, space weekend, and even a chocolate festival! On the day-to-day, you'll find a range of art, culture, and history exhibits to educate your kids, and the museum also houses the Bickford Theater, which regularly hosts children's shows and other performances.

Mayo Performing Arts Center

The Mayo Performing Arts Center is a nonprofit multi-use theater in Morristown hosting more than 200 performances each year. From the Sleeping Beauty Ballet to the Dirty Sock Fun Time Band, the Mayo Performing Arts Center regularly features kid-friendly shows and various dance shows. This family-friendly venue is easy to get to from the North Jersey highway and provides easy, convenient parking, perfect for people bringing their kids along. The center features regular sensory-friendly performances, too.

Washington's Headquarters

New Jersey is home to more than ten National Parks, including this one in Morristown. Not only is it an educational experience offering several galleries and the Ford Mansion to explore, but Washington's Headquarters Museum plays a film about the Revolutionary War on a loop. If your kids are in school and learning about the nation's history, a visit here might be the perfect way to spend a weekend afternoon. You might also want to visit Jockey Hollow, which features several fascinating Revolutionary War exhibits, encampments, and walking trails.

George G. Frelinghuysen Arboretum

This arboretum in Morris Township features a thematic collection of plant life, such as all sorts of fall fruit, spring-blooming shrubs, ornamental grasses, shady trees, and other foliage. Kids will appreciate looking at the impressive collection of trees and shrubs. The arboretum is also home to an Education Center that offers courses and classes. Plus, this is where you can attend the Gingerbread Wonderland event hosted each year, which puts hundreds of edible gingerbread creations on display.

Glass Studios

A few great glass studios in Morristown work well for birthday parties and casual visits alike. Glassworks offers classes and walk-in open studio hours if your kids are interested in learning how to make elegant creations out of glass. Working with glass is best for school-aged children, as toddlers probably aren't a good fit for anything involving glass fragments!

Tourne County Park

Tourne County Park sprawls across 561 acres with 10.7 miles of trails meandering through the estate. Recreational opportunities are offered during all seasons of the year, including hiking, fishing, snowshoeing, sledding, and cross-country skiing.

The park is a great way to spend a day with your children and family. There is a children's play area, and the park has one of the best places in the area to go sledding. Plus, the playground is located in the shade, making it a nice place to spend time when it's hot outside. Denture Rock and Mouse Cradle Rock are also popular points of interest here, and the Rockaway River is perfect for canoeing and kayaking.

Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex

Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex is a beautiful spot for the whole family to enjoy. Imagination Station will keep kids entertained for hours, and the park boasts a gorgeous lake for swimming and fishing. Those who like to exercise like to come here to run or bike along the pathways. The complex is also a popular site for fundraisers, birthday parties, picnics, and carnivals.
